Mission Statements

Does Your Business Need A Mission Statement To Be Successful? Strictly speaking, the short answer would be... No! However, it would really depend upon, how much a Mission Statement would mean to you in real terms! Would it keep you focused upon what the business was all about. In my opinion, this would in turn depends upon how much relevance the Mission Statement has to you personally and your business in particular. From my perspective a Mission Statement should fulfill the following three criteria... Self Motivating... a Mission Statement should keep you focused upon what the business is all about. It should help you in making those daily decisions that are needed to run your business. In times of crisis, a Mission Statement should help you keep any decisions made about the future course of actions in line with your core principles. Value Assessment... although not in terms of dollars and cents, but rather in terms of what you and your business does best. The Acid Test... remember, a Mission Statement is not just to help keep you personally focused, it is also a statement intended to tell the public in general all about you and your business. To tell them what's in it for them, giving them a reason to business with you. Ask friends to read it and make comments. If they don't understand what it's all about, Start Again. In conclusion I think that I am in favour of all small businesses having a Mission Statement. I must go and write mine right now!
